Mike Horstman
On the storm-battered shores of Alaska’s Kodiak Island lives master hunting guide Mike Horstman. A Kodiak resident since the early 1980s, he lives alone in a remote coastline cabin, only accessible by boat or float plane – if the weather allows. Mike earns his income from just a few months of guiding hunts each year. The rest of his time is spent carving out a solitary subsistence living from his natural surroundings, hunting the island’s deer and goats for his meat, harvesting salmon and halibut straight from the Gulf of Alaska, trapping fox, otter and beaver for their valuable furs, and maintaining his homestead in one of the harshest environments on earth, all while contending with the 3,500 ferocious brown bears who also call the island home.
